The goals of participation in Community Crew are to develop a sense of community responsibility, self-reliance, personal responsibility, public speaking and leadership skills. This opportunity is open to young women and men in grades 7 to 12.
Community Crew raises money to fund ongoing philanthropic programs to benefit the community. Community Crew chooses their own programs and assists the organization with their programs and fundraisers. Some examples of our current programs are Adopt-A-Bear, Hygiene Kits, Roman’s Chariots, holiday food baskets, partnering with various food banks for monthly donations and supporting Covina Valley Community Support with their programs and fundraising efforts, such as the Thrift Shop, the annual Christmas Tree Brunch and "Tee It Up Fore Kids" golf Tournament. Our teens are continuously seeking new ways to support the community.
About Us
Community Crew, formerly Assisteens®, is the philanthropic youth auxiliary of Covina Valley Community Support
(formerly Assistance League® of Covina Valley) for young women and men in grades 7–12. Participation offers teens
meaningful, hands-on experiences that build confidence, leadership, and a strong sense of responsibility. Members
develop communication and public speaking skills, learn to work collaboratively, and gain real-world experience
through event planning and community service. By serving alongside adult mentors and peers, teens strengthen
initiative, accountability, and compassion—skills that prepare them for future academic, career, and leadership
opportunities while making a positive impact in their community.
Community Crew members raise funds to support and lead ongoing programs such as Adopt-A-Bear, Hygiene Kits,
Roman’s Chariots, holiday food baskets, and monthly food and essentials drives for partner food banks. They also
support Covina Valley Community Support events, including the Christmas Tree Brunch and Tee It Up Fore Kids Golf
Tournament. Beyond established programs, teens are encouraged to identify emerging community needs and take
initiative in developing new ways to serve.
We meet on the first Sunday of every month with some exceptions like Labor Day.
For over 30 years, Adopt-A-Bear is one of our longest on-going programs. Bears are donated to local police and fire departments, as well as hospitals and to foster youth. They are also added ot our Assault Survivor Kits, which are given to individuals after a traumatic incident. These cuddly bears bring comfort during a difficult time. We fundraise each year with our Adopt-A-Bear Campaign.
A program that is close to our hearts, because it was inspired by a story of a long-time member. Her grandson Roman was born with Gastroschisis. His intestines were on the outside of his body. He underwent surgery 4 hours after he was born. But it took almost 2 years for his intestines to work. So, he lived on IV nutrition support. With Roman requiring ongoing IV support, it was nearly impossible to be able to stroll with him and take him away from his bed.
This inspired the wagon with an IV pole attached that allows families to take their child outside on a walk with their IV needs intact. These wagons have been donated to hospitals all over Southern California since 2007.
….And Roman is all grown up and in college.
This program is funded through the annual “Roman’s Chariot Spaghetti Dinner.” This is a wonderful event where the Community Crew learn how to cook and prepare the food; plan and set up the event, serve the food and clean-up. They sell tickets that may be used for a dine in experience with raffle opportunities or meals can be picked-up to go.
The Community Crew support our chapter programs: Project Student Support and Hug in a Box by providing hygiene kits. The hygiene kits for Project Student Support include: a large bottle of Shampoo and Conditioner, brush/comb, soap, deodorant, toothpaste, toothbrushes, nail clippers. They provide Hug in a Box with a travel version, which includes travel pouch, travel size shampoo, conditioner, body lotion, soap, nail file and lip balm. If there is a need for hygiene kits and they have the funds, they are willing to provide to those in need. One way this program is funded is through our annual fall fundraiser.
Community Crew support our community partners, such as food shelters, Project 29:11, Shepherd’s Pantry, and local school districts’ health and wellness centers. They donate food and goods for their shelves, as well as holiday food baskets for families in need. They are continuing to find new partners and assist in supporting their needs. This program is supported by our fall fundraiser and generous donations throughout the year. Our Community Crew are encouraged to collect donations from family and friends for the monthly item(s) requested each month that are in high demand at Shepard’s pantry.
Our Community Crew provide hygiene kits for Project Student Support, which clothes children K-12. The hygiene kits are given to the families that are dressed. Our chapter serves the Covina, West Covina, Charter Oak, Baldwin Park, Glendora and Azusa unified school districts. Recently added was the addition of providing travel sized hygiene kits for Hug in a Box. Hug in a Box is a philanthropic program that provides “wear-home” clothing and personal care items to children and adults of assault through our local hospitals.
Our Community Crew can work alongside our incredible membership in the Thrift Shop. While working in the Thrift Shop our Community Crew gain skills that will help them in their future endeavors, such as retail experience, customer service, organization skills and more.
The golf tournament is held at South Hills Country Club. The Community Crew provide support by selling raffle tickets after the round of golf and assisting members where they are needed.
The annual Christmas Tree Brunch is our main fundraiser. It is held at the Disneyland® Hotel with around 1000 guests in attendance each year. There are tree and treasures opportunity drawings, a silent auction and live auction. Our Community Crew play a large part in the execution of this event the day of, by assisting members with set-up of trees and treasures, the silent auction and tables before the event. They sell tickets during the event and pull the winners. Our senior Community Crew are presented to the audience and their achievements are celebrated. For many of our Community Crew, the Brunch is one of their favorite things to do each year. Besides working the event, we support the organization by donating several tree and treasures each year.
