Paul Avila dedicated his life to serving the unhoused and vulnerable populations through Pauly’s Project. He developed a mentoring and workforce development program to help people rebuild their lives. He organized weekly street outreach, providing food, water, hygiene kits, clothing, and so many other essential items that people needed. But more than that, Paul gave something even greater—he gave hope, dignity, and compassion to those who felt forgotten. He collaborated with local businesses, churches, and civic groups to expand services and connect people to resources, ensuring his mission always reached further Inspired countless volunteers to join his mission, multiplying his impact across the community.
This is the first time someone who has passed has been nominated for this award. Paul tragically passed at the age of 48, but his life was one of purpose, compassion, and service. He did so much in his time here—everyone was a friend to Paul, and he treated a homeless person the same way he treated a CEO. His legacy, dedication, and actions continue to serve and transform lives, creating lasting change in our beautiful City of Covina and throughout LA County.
Yes. Paul supported the Assistance League of Covina Valley by collaborating at community events, spreading awareness of their work, and fostering a shared mission of service. His partnership and encouragement amplified the League’s values of volunteerism, compassion, and transforming lives.
Paul Avila was not just a volunteer—he embodied service as a way of life. He was a single father of his son, Pauly, who is blind, autistic, and non-verbal, and required 24/7 care. From learning to be Pauly’s voice, Paul extended that same compassion to the most vulnerable people in our community—those who are too often overlooked or ignored. At the time of his passing, Paul was also caring for his father with dementia, yet still managed to give endlessly of himself to others. He did so much in his short time here, leaving behind a legacy of compassion and action. What set him apart was his humility—he treated everyone the same, whether a person living on the street or a CEO in a boardroom. His life was a constant act of sacrifice, advocacy, and unconditional love— always giving back, always lifting others up, and always inspiring people to do the right thing. His legacy continues to transform lives, making him the true definition of a “Hero of the Heart.”
